90 Days From Woke

The Story of an Overnight Instagram Sensation

by Nonye Akuba

Meet Leilani—people pleaser, self-improvement tool addict and professional third wheel. Her life as of late is an unfulfilling repeat of missteps, flops and faux pauxs. She’s stranded in the doldrums and hasn’t been able to escape…Until she learns her cousin, Chantal, who’s never had her life together, is planning a wedding for the fall and had the unmitigated gall to overlook her as maid of honor. She hasn’t consulted Leilani about this life-changing decision, let alone introduced her to the new beau.

Yet, there’s a connection between Leilani and this mystery man—and she’s determined to exploit it. A plane ticket, new look, and the support of two zany friends combine to turn Leilani Rose into Miami’s newest Instagram starlet. Well intentioned, although haplessly misguided, Leilani bungles her way into a new lifestyle of celebrity. When Chantal’s fiancé and a hot, up and coming star take an interest in her, and she becomes the focus of a scandal, she starts to wonder is the new notoriety worth it or does she want her old life back?

Nonye Akuba is a New-Adult Fiction novelist. Nonye offers stories that loosely pull from her own experience, the experiences of her closest friends, and a pretty overactive imagination. 90 Days from Woke is a fictional dramedy that refreshingly interwines lessons of forgiveness, self-acceptance, and the quest  for true love into an entertaining joyride.

When Nonye isn’t writing, she is managing her Identity 31 clothing brand–an athleisure brand that merges the fundaments reflected in Proverbs 31:10-31 with a fresh, uniquely urban fashion style. It is a lifestyle brand that embodies a wholehearted love for God, love for family, commitment to purpose and an incontestable grind.

Dare to Defy by Breanna Hayse

Dare to Defy by Breanna Hayse

Game of Thrones fans- BEWARE! If Khaleesi and her dragons got you hot and bothered, then this book will demand that you plunge into an ice bath just to cool down. Dare to Defy includes spanking of adult women, tasteful sexual scenes, poetic justice, and elements of BDSM.

Princess Daynel of the Northern Kingdom has never been the type to meekly submit to anyone—not her father, her brothers or any spoiled, pasty-faced Southern Kingdom prince who proclaims his right to her hand in marriage. The arranged marriage to the man is the least of her worries after the high priestess of the Dragon Gods warned her of her betrothed evil intent for her and her beloved kingdom.

Daring to defy her father’s command to marry, she flees into the dense woods where she is faced with her future—to save her people. During her flight, she comes face to face with the enormous warrior-priest named Draiken. He introduces her to the powerful magic that she holds within her will and also teaches her that defying the commands of the gods result in painful and humiliating consequence. A severe bare bottom spanking fails to change the attitude of the feisty little princess, forcing Draiken to take matters a little deeper and her body is awakened to a sexual journey that leaves her soaring.

With the growing power of darkness multiplying with each passing day, the dragon priest is pressed to do whatever is necessary to teach Daynel how to properly wield her powers—even if it means being unable to sit. She also becomes the driving force behind his heart as he finds love in the midst of the battle between good and evil.

BDSM/AP lifestyler Breanna Hayse strives to give her readers truth and reality of the BDSM/Age-Play/Total Power and Erotic Exchange lifestyle.
Who am I?
I'm a native Californian gone 'wild', and had the opportunity to travel the globe and discover the world through the eyes of both a Marine Intelligence specialist and a BDSM lifestyler. I left the service to go into hospice nursing and grief counseling, eventually working as a marriage and family therapist for those involved in alternative lifestyle development. This experience has allowed me to gain unique inspiration for my books and offer realistic plots and relatable characters.

In 2004, my husband, John, and I joined forces to work with both submissives and dominants- teaching, training, listening and loving. Our goal was to take the mystery and fear out of the lifestyle and mentor people in safe, consensual and healthy relationships.

My first book, The Game Plan, was published in 2012 and opened the door to the now-booming world of Age-Play literature. Since that time, I've devoted my 'spare' time to writing, researching, community involvement, and private and group pro bono counseling in deviant behavior, alternative lifestyle, and addiction recovery.

I was formally 'dungeon trained' as a Domme before discovering my submissive side when I joined the service. My scenarios are pulled primarily from either personal experience or observation, including spending time in BDSM clubs as the safety/medical officer. My multi-faceted background allows me to glean from many avenues and give a unique and intelligent literary experience through elements of fantasy and fiction. I also discuss the questions and psychology of the lifestyle in a manner that is fun and informative, and based on 'the real deal.'

I live with my husband, musician, and fellow-author, John Hayse, and two border collies in southern California. We practice a 24/7 D&S relationship with speckles of AP (and many trips to Build-A-Bear), and happily spend every moment together that we can. My hobbies include my puppies, hiding my vanilla salt-water taffy where John can't find it, exotic art, collecting inspirational trinkets, and developing my own paddle line. You can also see me as a featured author/instructor in professional conference settings and as a Sexpert for kinkyliterature.com.

Soul's Desire by Sharon C. Cooper

Soul's Desire

Unparalleled Love Series

Some past loves can stand the test of time…

Ballet dancer Soul Carrington has lived her dream of traveling the world. But the past year has been one life hurdle after another until she moves back to Atlanta. Now life is looking up, especially when she comes face to face with a past love. A man who makes her heart dance pirouettes and her body pulse with desire.

Not a day has gone by that police officer Micah Olsen hasn’t longed for his first love. However, their encounter in Atlanta is not by chance. Yet, against his better judgment, he has to let her believe it is, which isn’t easy. All of the emotions he once felt for her return with a vengeance. Their attraction is more powerful than ever, and when hot kisses turn into heated nights, Micah knows he has to come clean. But will it be too late?

Excerpt:

Soul’s breath stalled in her throat when her gaze clashed with Micah’s. Those whiskey-colored eyes bored into her, piercing her with a need she hadn’t felt in ages, leaving her unable to move or speak. The years had truly been good to him. Micah had always been gorgeous with his smooth, pecan-brown skin. But the man standing only ten feet from her now was mouthwatering fine!

In college he wore his hair in cornrows, which Soul hated, and his face was always clean-shaven. Now he sported a low fade and a little scruff on his face, which she liked. Back then he was athletically built, like a basketball player. Now, his large frame had filled out in all the right places. His white T-shirt hugged his wide chest and broad shoulders, while his biceps bulged beneath the short sleeves.

A magnetic force surged through her body as his appreciative gaze slid over her from head to toe. How could he still have such an effect on her? It had been like forever since they’d seen each other. Yet, every nerve ending within her was standing at attention.

Ugh. If only she’d known he was coming. She would’ve gotten cleaned up instead of letting him see her all grungy and sweaty.

“Hey, beautiful.” His deep voice settled around her, sending tingles swarming over her skin. “You’re even prettier than I remember.”

Snow in July by Kim Iverson Headlee

Snow in July

by Kim Iverson Headlee

From the award-winning pen of Kim Iverson Headlee comes the exciting, poignant love story of a distressed damsel who wields a fierce fireplace poker and the smoking hot knight she must save from himself.

"Captivating!" ~ Kemberlee Lugo-Shortland, Heart of Fiction

Sir Robert Alain de Bellencombre has been granted what every man wants: a rich English estate in exchange for his valiant service at the Battle of Hastings. To claim this reward, the Norman knight must wed the estate's Saxon heiress. Most men would leap at such an opportunity, but for Alain, who broke his vow to his dying mother by failing to protect his youngest brother in battle, it means facing more easily broken vows. But when rumors of rampant thievery, dangerous beasts, and sorcery plaguing a neighboring estate reach his ears, nothing will make him shirk duty to king and country when people's lives stand at risk. He assumes the guise of a squire to scout the land, its problems, and its lady.

Lady Kendra of Edgarburh has been granted what no woman wants: a forced marriage to an enemy who may be kith or kin to the man who murdered her beloved brother. Compounding her anguish is her failure to awaken the miraculous healing gift bequeathed by their late mother in time to save his life. Although with his dying breath, he made her promise to seek happiness above all, Kendra vows that she shall find neither comfort nor love in the arms of a Norman… unless it snows in July.

Alain is smitten by Lady Kendra from the first moment of their meeting; Kendra feels the forbidden allure of the handsome and courtly Norman "squire." But a growing evil overshadows everyone, invoking dark forces and ensnaring Kendra in a plot to overthrow the king Alain is oath-bound to serve. Kendra and Alain face a battle unlike any other as their honor, their love, their lives, and even their very souls lie in the balance.

“Would my lord knight grant me a boon that would enable me to fulfill an altogether different vow?” Kendra slid her hands up his chest, reveling in the feel of his taut muscles beneath the tunic’s thin linen.

“Name it, my lady,” Alain said in a husky whisper.

“Please…” She stood on tiptoe to reach around his neck and pull his face to hers, drawing a deep breath. “Please kiss me.”

He lost no time in honoring her request. Their mouths met, tentatively at first, then harder and more ravenously as their mutual hunger found freedom. Their tongues entwined, locked in a dance far more sublime than any pale dream. She felt the void left by her brother’s death beginning, at last, to fill.

So this was why Del had been so insistent that she seek happiness. He knew it would help her heal, God rest his dear soul. She increased the pressure on Alain’s lips, and he answered in kind.

Faint shouts forced them to step apart. Alain looked out the nearest window and hurried to each of the others in turn, muttering in French.

“Is it the outlaws? What do you see?”

“Nothing.” He spat the word as if blaming it for the interruption. “The surviving outlaws must have returned. Does this tower have someplace to hide where they might not think to look?”

Kim Headlee lives on a farm in southwestern Virginia with her family, cats, goats, Great Pyrenees goat guards, and assorted wildlife. People and creatures come and go, but the cave and the 250-year-old house ruins--the latter having been occupied as recently as the mid-twentieth century--seem to be sticking around for a while yet.

Kim has been a published novelist since 1999 with the first edition of Dawnflight (Sonnet Books, Simon & Schuster) and has been studying the Arthurian legends for nigh on half a century.

Losing the Plot by Richard Grainger

Losing the Plot

Richie Malone #1

by Richard Grainger

Genre: Thriller, Romantic Suspense, Mystery

"Let me tell you about my day so far. I’ll begin by telling you about waking up in my Marbella villa to find a dead girl in my bed; about being interrogated by the Spanish police – or hombres purporting to be the Spanish police; about learning that I’m going to have my kneecaps shattered by the former Chief of Staff of the Provisional IRA. That is, if he can find me before the godfather of the Andalucian Russian mafia hunts me down. And not only that; it’s not yet ten o’clock and I’ve taken up smoking and have drunk half a bottle of brandy before I’ve even had breakfast." Richie Malone is an old-school philanderer, misogynistic playboy and writer with an undeniable charm. Although he has yet to pen anything to attract literary acclaim using his own name, he has made a fortune writing pornographic novels under a female pseudonym. But now his troubles are just beginning. He needs answers, and he needs them fast. Just who is this dead girl? How did she get here? And why his bed? And, of course, did he kill her? Malone finds himself caught in the middle of a turf war between Irish racketeers, the Russian Mafia and a Columbian cartel. And so, he loses the plot. But can he get it back before he loses everything … including his life?

Nine Months Ago:

I leave the Moët Bar feeling mildly pleased with myself.

And why not?

I have a new nickname – ‘Belfast Boy’ – which carries a certain gravitas, swinging precariously between intrigue and decadence.

I can’t remember exactly who it was who called me this, but I didn’t sleep with her, which for me is quite unusual.

I’d been double-parking shitty Spanish beer with equally shitty cheap white wine for several hours and, truth be told, the prospect of sex somehow got shunted down the to-do list.

But I remember she had the deepest green eyes I could swim in without drowning, long, tanned legs that I would gladly die between and an accent that located her somewhere near Belgrade.

I know these things; don’t ask me why. There’s the intrigue bit coming out.

Anyway, the point is that despite the fact that I would gladly have swum up the Lagan to hand-wash her underwear, there were too many other attractive women in my backfield. To cop off with one would have diluted my chances of nailing the others at a future opportunity.

Tip number one: sometimes, amigo, it’s necessary to take a strategic ‘did not bat’ in the interest of the bigger picture.

Anyway, in addition to being a stunner, she had one of those quirky names that stubbornly wouldn’t stick in my mind. I’m pretty good at getting a bird’s name, but I’m struggling here.

I’m thinking maybe Agata? The first and last letters were definitely ‘A’s, so – I’m guessing – Agata would definitely be in the ballpark. Birds love it when you get their name right, when you admire it and show you’ve remembered, but don’t overuse it because that’s just tacky, like sending flowers after the first shag. Or even worse, getting flowers delivered to a bar you know she’ll be drinking in with her mates. That’s stalking, and it’s also tacky.

Okay, so this is how things finished up:

I insult the new waitress – who turns out to be the owner’s daughter – but repair the situation to the extent that I’m given a drink ‘on the house’.

I call a man with a small, bemused-looking dog a drug-dealing homosexual, and he also offers me a drink.

I tell the doorman – who intervened after I had insulted the waitress – that if he continues to look at me in the disdainful manner appropriate for the English tourist, he will have to surgically remove my glass from his anus.

Maybe a little of this is lost in translation, but he also bought me a drink.

And so, all in all, things could have turned out a whole lot worse.

So what is it about me?

You see, I can’t go anywhere where I have an audience and behave anything other than badly.

Horn Sworn Series by Taylor Haiden and Angela Kulig

Dark Unicorn

Horn Sworn Book 1

by Taylor Haiden & Angela Kulig

Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas and Victoria Aveyard, Dark Unicorn is the first of the new and mysterious adult fantasy series Horn Sworn.

Princess Wrenyve knows her oath to return her Kingdom’s missing artifact, the Heart of Spellshallow, means one of the King’s children will die. Even if Wren is cunning, fast, and strong enough, there’s a good chance it will still be her.

Without the Heart, magic will flee the land faster than the night flees the day. Without the Heart, Spellshallow, and everything in it will cease to exist. As her brother’s shameful thievery is uncovered, Wren must swallow her pride and accept help from allies whom she knows she can’t trust:
- Thackery is the ambitious son of the richest and most powerful councilman—her very ex, scorned lover—and the wounds Wren caused him are still raw.
- Calen isn’t a boy at all. Trapped in human form after a hideous defeat, Calen may have lost his horn, but is still a unicorn—a self-serving, treacherous scoundrel, as dangerous to any man who crosses him as he is to the innocence of every fair maiden.
- Luckily for Wren, she was already doomed.

To find the Heart and restore the magic, to retrieve the lost horn, Wren and her unfortunate travel companions must survive three separate realms—each more deadly than the last. Unknown enemies and strange magic hinder their way, and yet the most perilous thing is what lies within their own hearts.

Hybrid: Adapt or Die by Rebecca Henry

Hybrid: Adapt or Die

by Rebecca Henry

Genre: SciFi Horror, Romance

Agent Van of the CIA is sent to an Australian underground military surveillance base called Pine Gap. Agent Van finds himself thrown in a conspiracy cover up of an ancient alien race known as species X. He falls in love with Annika, a mysterious and uncommon woman who displays unusual abilities, leading Van to question her own origin. Mystery and horror explode around Agent Van during a cave diving exhibition to search for a lost colleague referred to as Agent One. The only clue for Agent Van and his team is a cryptic message carved on a wall inside the bleak cave that reads “Agent One is gone. No more Agent One.” Terror arrives as the agents are trapped inside the ominous cave. Agent Van soon learns that there is more to Pine Gap than Species X.

Breathless, she turned to me and unwound the scarf from her neck and wrapped it around mine. “I want you to be surprised,” she laughed as she covered my eyes. I heard the door open, and she slipped her hand in mine to lead me inside. Something swooped over my head, and I ducked.

“What was that?” I asked, unnerved.

“Just listen,” she giggled.

I stood stock still as I tilted my head, listening. Are those birds?

“Is that birds?” I asked, excited. I hadn’t seen birds in months! I started to lift my scarf, but Annika stopped my hand.

“There’s more!” she whispered in my ear, and goosebumps raised on my arms. She led me by the hand deeper into the room.

“Smell,” she commanded gently.

An intoxicating aroma filled my nose, and I grinned. “Flowers!” My heart swelled. This was the happiest I'd felt, not just at Pine Gap, but in my adult life. Being with Annika was like being a kid again. The world felt new and grand when I explored it through Annika’s eyes.

“Very good!” She clapped her hands. “Let's see how you do on the next one.” She guided me to another area of the room, and I felt like I was walking among the clouds, dizzy with birdsong and flowers.

“What do I get if I guess right?” I asked, a wide, stupid grin painted across my face underneath her scarf.

Her hand held my wrist as she guided me to the ground. “You'll have to guess correctly before I tell you your prize.” I sat beside her, running my hands along the ground. It wasn't hard, like every other surface at Pine Gap. It was soft. I buried my hand amidst the thick, cool blades tickling my fingertips. Is that…?

“No way...grass!” Unable to contain myself, I ripped the blindfold off, too excited to play this game any longer. I marveled at Annika and her room of miracles.

Annika sat on her knees as I swiveled my head around, trying to see everything at once. After being surrounded by black uniforms and steel hallways, the room was a raucous symphony of vibrant color. We were inside an enormous greenhouse filled with UV light. A false sun shone down on us, warm and familiar like the sun I once lived under. Macaws looped over our heads, soaring through the air as if they were free in the world above. Something tickled my finger, and I marveled at the tiny ladybug exploring my hand.

It was a tiny Garden of Eden, and my eyes darted from one wonder to the next before landing on Annika. She watched me, smiling at my open-mouthed wonder. “This is amazing!” I laughed joyously. “I didn't even know this was here!”

Annika carefully picked the ladybug from my hand and set it gently on a leaf. “Not many people do. This is sorta my place.” She looked up at me, a shy smile spreading across her lovely face. “Maybe it could be our place.”

My chest tightened, choking off the all the words I wanted to say to her. She lifted her hand to my cheek, her face full of understanding. She leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss to my lips.

They say a kiss can make a guy weak in the knees. This is an understatement. Annika's kiss was bewitching, and I whole-heartedly allowed myself to fall under her spell. I was a lost cause for any other female. There was only Annika, as if I had been searching for my whole life, and the answer was finally before me. The only woman I could ever love, would ever love, is Annika.

As the deadly operation puts a target on their backs, they’ll have to decide what matters most: the truth…or their lives.

THE DECEPTION, by Kat Martin

Excerpt

After her meltdown at the bar, which still embarrassed her, Kate spent the following week hounding the Dallas Police Department.

Chrissy's case had been assigned to a homicide detective named Roger Benson, an older guy with thinning brown hair and a bad attitude.  She'd done a little digging, found out he had previously worked in the sex crimes division, an unabashed misogynist who acted as if he believed all women were whores and was completely the wrong person to be handling cases in that department--which was probably why he now worked in homicide.

She tried to give him the benefit of the doubt, figuring the crimes he had worked had changed him into the man he had become.  Or maybe he had always been like that.  Either way, Kate didn't like him.

"Your sister was using the name Tina Galen," he told her when she appeared in his office demanding answers for the fourth day in a row.  "She was a heroin addict and a known prostitute."

Her heart squeezed, though the police had already told her those things.  "She was murdered, Detective.  Her killer needs to face justice."

"I'm sorry for your loss, Ms. Gallagher.  We're doing everything we can to locate the person who killed her, but in circumstances like these, the odds of finding him aren't good."

"The killer must have left evidence.  Fingerprints or DNA.  Something."

"We're working on it.  We believe Tina hooked up with a john who liked rough sex.  That night, he got carried away, beat her worse than he meant to, and killed her.  If that's the case, he may have assaulted women before."

"So you'll be able to find him."

"Like I said, we're working on it.  You need to let us do our job, Ms. Gallagher.  Coming down here every day and badgering us isn't going to help.  Now if you don't mind, I've got things I need to do.  Your sister's case isn't the only one on my desk."

She glanced over at the stack of files on the detective's desk and bit back a sharp retort.  "Yes, I can see that."  And clearly, arguing with Benson wasn't going to get her anywhere.

As she left the police station, it occurred to her there was a good chance nothing she said or did was going to get the answers she was determined to get in regard to Chrissy's death.

She needed someone to help her.  A detective who worked directly for her and strictly on her sister's murder case.

At twenty-nine, she was the owner of Gallagher and Company Consulting, an up-and-coming management consulting firm.  And though there were only two other analysts in the office so far, plus a receptionist who acted as her personal assistant, she had built a solid reputation during the time she'd been working in Dallas, and the company was making money.

She could afford to hire a private investigator.

Arriving in the lobby of the five-story building on North Akard near McKinney where the office was located, she waved at one of the security guards, a big guy named Clay, as she passed.

Kate's stomach tightened.  Clay didn't have the thick dark hair and gorgeous blue eyes of the man she had nearly had sex with in the parking lot of the Sagebrush Saloon, but he was almost as tall, with the same rock-solid body.  Every time she saw Clay, who was older and not nearly as good-looking, she thought of Jason "Hawk" Maddox and felt a combination of embarrassment and a ridiculous rush of heat.

Dear God, she had never been more turned on in her life.  When he'd hauled her out on the dance floor and pulled her into his big, powerful arms, it occurred to her for the first time, she might really go through with the hookup she had only imagined.

Maddox really knew how to dance.  And he could he kiss.  She could have kissed him for hours.

Thank God, she had come to her senses before it was too late.  She didn't do hookups, especially with hot, muscle-jocks in jeans and scuffed boots.  She didn't have sex with strangers.

But after she'd left the morgue, she had gone a little crazy.  Crying hadn't done a lick of good and eventually she had managed to pull herself together, but the terrible feelings of guilt and failure would not go away.

It didn't matter that she and Chrissy, an accidental baby eleven years younger, had never been close, that by the time Chrissy was in high school, Kate had moved from the small Texas town of Rockdale to Dallas.

She was working full time for Bain Consulting as a junior member of one of their teams when Chrissy began having problems with drugs and alcohol, and behaving promiscuously with boys.  Kate had gone back to Rockdale to talk to her but it hadn't done any good.  A few months later, her sister had run away from home, and though the police had done everything in their power to find her, Kate had never seen her again.

Not until the police had called with the terrible news of her murder and Kate had gone to the morgue.

How she'd wound up half drunk at the Sagebrush Saloon still wasn't completely clear.  She'd just been desperate to get the image of Chrissy's battered and bludgeoned body out of her head, and for a while in the backseat with Jason, it had actually worked.

It was impossible to think of anything but those big hands on her breasts and the thick ridge beneath the fly of his jeans.  God, she had never known that kind of want before.

Brides of the Kindred by Evangeline Anderson

Excerpts from Brides of the Kindred Books

Book 1--Claimed

Excerpt 1

He shrugged, his liquid gold eyes still fixed on hers. “Yeah, I admit it—I’m damn eager to get you in my bed. Can’t wait to feel you under me. Can’t wait to make you come.” He gave her a slow, hot smile.

“You don’t want much, do you?” Liv tried to sound sarcastic but her words came out breathy instead.

Baird pinned her with a hot look. “I’ll tell you what I want. I want to know what kind of sounds you make when you lose control and feel you tremble against me when I push you over the edge. Want to touch you, taste you, spread your legs and go down on you until you cry and moan and beg and pull my hair. That’s what I’m eager for, Olivia.”

Excerpt 2

“N-nice teddy,” Liv heard herself saying in a trembling voice as she backed away. “Don’t bite me, just stay away.”

But the bear thing seemed to be attracted to the sound of her voice rather than put off by it. With an interested sounding huffing noise it came closer and Liv backed further away.

She found herself backing down the dim hallway, blinking to see since her eyes had grown accustomed to the light in the kitchen. Still the alien teddy bear followed her making huffing sounds in a hoarse voice and snuffling the air as though trying to identify her scent. Walking on all fours as it now was, Liv estimated that it was probably just a little smaller than a Pomeranian but about a hundred times scarier because A—it was clearly an alien creature with unknowable intentions and B—it had teeth like a freaking shark.

“Nice teddy,” she whispered again, fumbling around for the door to the bathroom. Maybe she could lock herself inside somehow until Baird came back. She didn’t know how the weird bear creature had gotten into the suite in the first place—maybe it was some kind of parasite that needed to be exterminated like a really huge cockroach—but at least Baird was big enough to take it out of commission. If he would ever freaking get back. Where was the human food store located on this ship anyway? And what the hell was taking him so long?

Finally she felt the bathroom entrance and backed slowly into it. But as she went her foot caught on something on the floor and she lost her balance. Windmilling her arms desperately, she shrieked in surprise as she tried to keep from landing flat on her ass.

Unfortunately her big arm gestures and ear-splitting screams seemed to have a bad effect on the creature. Previously it had appeared to be simply curious about her but now it reared up on its hind legs again and let out a hoarse and awful roar that chilled Liv’s blood. Dear God I’m about to be eaten by a blue alien teddy bear, she thought wildly as it came toward her. What the hell are they going to put on my tombstone?

Here lies Liv,

Without a care

She died from the bite

Of a teddy bear.

Okay, so maybe she wasn’t completely sober yet but she was completely terrified. Where was Baird?

Book 2--Hunted

Excerpt 1

“You’re taking a risk, you know.” But he was already moving, sliding the two inches she’d managed to capture along with the head of his cock out of her and then back in.

“How…how do you mean?” Sophie moaned as he pressed even deeper into her.

“My blood is burning.” His blood red eyes flashed, emphasizing the truth of his statement. “And filling you with my cock makes me want to do more than just fuck you—it makes me want to bite you. To bond you to me. And if I do that—if I sink my fangs in you and inject my essence while I fill you with my cum—you’ll never be free of me.”

“What…what if I don’t want to be free of you?”

Excerpt 2

Sophie had been falling behind but the frightening cries gave her a second wind. Gasping for air, her breath tearing in her throat, she gripped Sylvan’s hand tighter and put on a new burst of speed.

“There—ahead.” He didn’t sound a bit out of breath and it occurred to Sophie that he would have been able to go much faster without her. She looked where he was pointing and saw a brilliant spot of sunlight in a clearing up ahead. It was nothing more than a dusty, unpaved parking lot in the back of a ramshackle building, but to her it looked like an oasis in the desert.

Safe, we’ll be safe there! she thought deliriously. If we can only get to it… There was still a long way to go under the cover of the trees before they reached the sunlit refuge. But at least they could see it, could see they were headed in the right direction.

The urlich behind them seemed to see the clearing too because there was a chorus of angry growling and barking behind them. Oh my God, they’re gaining! Sophie started to turn her head to see how close the animals were and then remembered what Sylvan had said. Resolutely, she kept her face forward and kept running, trying to ignore the fear that rushed through her like fire.

She’d never liked big dogs—especially fierce ones. Growing up, their next door neighbors had raised Dobermans and one of them had gotten out into the neighborhood once while she and Liv were riding their bikes. It had chased them eight blocks and Sophie had pedaled until she thought her heart would burst, sure it was going to catch them and kill them both.

But the Doberman that got loose wasn’t genetically and mechanically modified, whispered a little voice in her head. The urlich are. And if they catch you they won’t just bite. They’re looking for you for a reason. Because the Scourge want you…

Okay, none of this was what she needed to be thinking about right now. At the moment what she needed was to concentrate on was—

A fresh round of baying and snarling cut her thoughts off as cleanly as a sharp knife.

Because these sounds were coming from in front of them.

They were surrounded.

Book 3--Sought

“Forget it. I know what your idea of help is—both of you skewering me at once. I’m not about to become a sexual shish-ka-bob for the rest of my life just because I ate the wrong fruit by mistake.”

“It doesn’t have to be like that,” Lock pleaded. “Please, my lady, we can help you without making love to you or bonding you to us—I swear it.” To his surprise, Deep sighed and came to stand beside him at the door.

“Lock is right,” he said, putting a hand on the wooden panel. “Come out, Kat. I didn’t mean to frighten you, I was just…” He stopped and cleared his throat. Looking down at his boots, he continued. “I was angry when I saw you talking to those two unmated males.”

There was silence on the other side of the door and then, finally, it opened a crack. “Is that your version of ‘I’m sorry?’” Kat asked, one blue eye appearing warily in the narrow opening.

“It is.” Deep nodded, tightlipped and frowning. “And I don’t say it often.”

“Or ever,” Lock murmured, earning a glare from his brother.

“All right.” Kat opened the door all the way and stood there, her arms crossed protectively over her breasts as she shifted from foot to foot. “I’m listening. I wouldn’t be if the stupid fruit I ate wasn’t driving me crazy, but it is. So talk. How can you help me without the three of us doing the hokey-poke-her?”

“The what?” Deep frowned. “As much as I study Earth vernacular, sometimes I still find you completely incomprehensible, Kat.”

“Oh yeah?” She frowned up at him. “Well that goes double from me back to you, Deep. So come on, boys—what’s the plan?”

Book 4--Found

“More,” he growled, breaking the kiss to stare into her eyes. “I need it more.”

“Then let’s get to it.” Standing back, Lauren made sure Xairn’s eyes were on her as she untied her bikini top and let it fall to the floor. When she reached for the ties that held the bottom in place, he made a hoarse, hungry noise in the back of his throat. “That’s right,” Lauren murmured as she untied it slowly and let the two little triangles of white fabric drop, baring her pussy for him. “Look at me, baby. Look but don’t touch.” Then she walked toward him. “I, on the other hand, am finally going to touch just as much as I want.”

As she spoke, she ran her hands over his broad, muscular shoulders and chest, tracing the brand of her name with her fingertips. Then she moved lower, stoking her way down his corded abdomen. She could feel the tension coiled like a spring inside him—the barely controlled power thrumming just under the surface of his smooth tan skin. It was like stroking a caged tiger, one that might break the lock that held it and attack at any time.

“Lauren…” Xairn’s voice was thick with warning as her fingers trailed lower, running over his thighs and moving inward. “What are you doing?”

“Exploring.” She gave him a slow, lazy smile. “I’ve been dying to get a look at you down here, you know?

Memoirs of a False Messiah

by Pamela Becker

Genre: Women's Fiction

MiMi knows she is meant for something greater. She has a God-given mission. This belief, together with tragedy, moves her from the mixed-religion home of her early childhood to Orthodox Judaism in her teens, to the establishment and development of her cult in the Israeli desert. MiMi draws from the women in her life, in the Bible, and in other ancient texts, weaving modern and biblical dilemmas, as she shapes a truly unique place for her followers and herself. When her life and utopian community grow more turbulent and even violent, she questions her mission.

Deeply affecting and thought-provoking, Memoirs of a False Messiah is the richly told story of a woman's struggle to find her place in a world reluctant to accept her.

Excerpt

I had my first vision at three.

One night, as I slept, I saw myself as a grown woman, surrounded by lions standing on hind legs growling at me, a wall of fire glowering behind me. The only way out was a rope that descended from above but was attached to nothing. I climbed it; my thighs rubbed raw from its roughness, my feet bloody where the lions nicked them with their teeth, my robes flaming, making me unbearably hot until I dropped the garments below and continued climbing higher.

“MiMi, it’s okay,” my father’s voice broke through the dream, and I opened my eyes. He sat on the edge of my bed and patted the damp bangs away from my forehead. His thick black hair was messy, and he wore only an undershirt and boxer shorts. His eyes, blue with specks of gold, momentarily disappeared in the shadows of his face and I could feel him shivering in my small room.

To my father - I told him what happened, watching his eyebrows join with concern - this was a bad dream brought on by an overactive imagination and normal childhood fears. But to me, the dream signified much more. The next day, after I found scratch marks on the bottoms of my feet, I asked my father to write down the details of my dream as I explained them to him. I put that piece of paper in a special paper-mâché jewelry box I was given on my birthday.

I had recently learned to read from a record of songs based on Bible stories. I can’t imagine who might have given me such an album. My father was a fallen Orthodox Jew, disowned by his family when he married my non-Jewish mother. I’m surprised that not only was the record ever brought into my parents’ home but that it remained.

With a babysitter's help, I mastered the kiddie record player. I played the Bible song record, and sitting on my knees in my bedroom, followed the lyrics printed in large letters on the back of the album cover.

The first song was about Daniel and the Lions’ Den. I don’t recall how the words go anymore but the drawing on the album cover of a small boy standing alone, surrounded by angry, vicious lions, frightened me. I would close my eyes as I listened to the song and imagined myself in the den.

After the night I had my vision, my parents paid more careful attention to my education. The Bible record disappeared and was replaced with one of fairy tales, of helpless beautiful girls saved at the last minute by their handsome princes. I commented that the princesses’ parents didn’t take good care of them, and soon that record disappeared too. My father took to setting me on his lap, and we read the newspaper together. In the family room, the television off and all my toys put away for the evening, I would sound out the headlines, and he would read me the articles.

That’s one of the happiest memories of my childhood, reading the paper with my father, stumbling over words like "inflation," sitting on his lap, my bright orange cotton-covered legs over his heavy blue jeans. I remember staring at his toenails, which were always a little too long and thick and thinking how powerful my father was. And how safe I was sitting on his lap. That’s one of the nasty tricks of childhood: the illusion of security.

I don’t have those kinds of memories about my mother. She worried about my eating the right foods and growing at the correct rate. Born small and underweight, like a raisin under a gray blanket in my black and white baby photos, I looked sunken until I hit puberty, no matter what she fed me or in what quantity. My mother, though, never looked sunken, even in her worst moods. Her skin always looked tan, her features sharp and her gray eyes clear. Her thin frame managed enough curves to keep her from appearing too skinny.

She decorated my bedroom with yellow wood furniture and carpeting that turned brown by the doorway. The wallpaper was striped yellow and green. No flowers. No pink. A gender-neutral haven for me in my formative years. Her own room was decorated with hefty wood, dark wool afghans, and a shaggy brown rug. Nothing too feminine.

That's how she dressed, too. Her clothes in muted colors looked serious. Her high, defined cheekbones and sturdy chin seemed to cooperate in denying any femininity. She had no time for makeup or time-consuming hairstyles, but I could tell by the way strangers looked at her that she was an attractive woman.

My mother had movement. People stared at the way she walked or lifted an object or how the wind blew her blond hair across her face. When she carried her coffee mug to her thin lips, you couldn’t help but watch the mug’s path, the curl of her fingers around the handle, the purse of her lips as she blew inside to cool the hot brown stuff. She was beautiful when she was in motion.

But when she was still, her hair settled on her neck, her gray eyes darkened, and her hands looked bony and long. She described herself as very Shiksa-looking, which I thought was my religion until years later I asked the librarian for a book on Shiksa-ism and she set me straight.

My dad, on the other hand, was all dark - hair, eyebrows and the stubble on his face that emerged by lunchtime. In a picture of a trip to the beach that sat in a wooden frame on the bookshelf, the black curls on his legs, arms, and even hands contrasted sharply against the light down on my mother and me.

I had a friend Tracey who lived across the street. My mother and I would go over there together. While the grown-ups drank coffee and ate cake, Tracey and I played with girlie toys that I usually had no access to at home: Barbies with all the accessories; dolls that wet their pants or regrew their hair after haircuts; and jewelry making kits that produced clunky pink bracelets and rings. I knew I was supposed to look down on such gender-specific toys, which made playing with them that much more fun. Besides, Tracey did anything I told her to. I controlled our games.

Tracey’s mom, Chrissy, would get down on her knees and show us how to mix and match Barbie’s clothes, and then she’d grab Tracey and rub her tummy until she laughed. When she tickled me too, I would giggle while my mom remained in her chair, her hot coffee still in her hand, looking down at us smiling. Then she would ask Tracey to show me her books.

By the time I started nursery school, I could read the Golden Book series to the other kids. I remember having confidence way back then of my power over my peers. They sat around me in a semi-circle and listened quietly as I read, their eyes on me, not the pictures. The teachers told my parents that I showed promise and moved me to pre-kindergarten.

My father taught me numbers, and soon I was adding. My mother would put me in the cart when she went grocery shopping, and by the time I was five, I would add the prices for her. Of course, I made mistakes, and remember crying because the decimal point that came between the dollar and the cents sides baffled me.

When I went to kindergarten, my mother went back to work full-time. She started to complain to my father that he had to help around the house more. They spent Sundays doing laundry, cleaning the house and having grown-up time, while I played at Tracey’s. At her Catholic school, she could only wear blue, gray or white clothes, and so we played dress up in the most outlandish outfits. Chrissy would find us, trapped on the high bathtub rim from where we had tried to see ourselves in the mirror. She would peel off the layers of the odd clothes, leaving us in Tracey’s ballet uniforms that we wore during these games, and sit us down at the kitchen table with milk, cookies, paper and a box of 144 crayons that astounded me by its opportunities.

Tracey drew pictures of us in our outfits, the heads, hands, and feet always too big. I sketched tall women with blond hair falling from the sky into the mouths of flames. With over twenty shades of orange and red to work with, I tried to perfect the fire each time. My mother refused to tape the pictures on the refrigerator, so I kept them in a pile in my desk drawer.

Sometimes, I stood in the kitchen doorway watching my mother and my dad make dinner. My mother would cry as my father held her against his chest for what seemed like a long time, or until something on the stove started smoking. They were about the same height, about 5’9”, and she stooped a little when he cradled her head in his neck, her arms around his shoulders, his hands gripping each other at the small of her back. I could see my father’s face through strands of my mom’s blond hair, the shadow of a beard showing, his teeth biting his lower lip and his eyes focused on me. I hated that look of helplessness on my father’s face and my mother’s weakness for causing it.

No one knew for sure what made her so sad as if it was some outside, uncontrollable, indiscernible force. The years passed, and as I grew bigger, my mother cried more and more frequently. She started missing dinner once and then twice a week for mysterious appointments. She would come home after I was already in my room for the night, and I heard the pouring of coffee and my parents’ low voices in the kitchen until I fell asleep. On those nights my father and I ate simple dinners of spaghetti and salad. He’d ask me questions about school and draw diagrams and word problems to show why subtraction was important, and what ancient history has to do with today. I loved those evenings so much; I secretly hoped my mother would have her appointments every night.

The Puppet Master by Ronald S Barak

The Puppet Master

by Ronald S. Barak

Genre: Thriller, Suspense

What would YOU do if they took everything you had, your family, your home, your business, your dignity, even—perhaps—your sanity?

 S. Barak's latest, The Puppet Master, prequel to The Amendment Killer, and the second in the Brooks/Lotello Thriller Series, is a gripping story of a political system gone awry—and those who feel compelled to fix it. “Have you ever killed anyone? I have. I’ll do it again. If I need to.” Three prominent political leaders in Washington, D.C., murdered in as many days.

Not a plausible story premise? What about the real world villain who recently mailed a series of pipe bombs to a number of prominent political figures? Ripped from the headlines? Barak gives new meaning to the word "timely." The Puppet Master isn't ripped from the headlines; written first, it forecast the headlines that followed!

The Puppet Master begins with a bang. Literally. Three of them. Not a page wasted. Capitol Hill panics. Who will be next? Others whisper that our political leaders are only getting what they deserve. Anxious to see who will be next. And why.

Crafty D.C. homicide detective Frank Lotello is tasked to find the killer. Cliff Norman, a local businessman with ample motive, is arrested. Politicians breathe a sigh of relief. However, when Lotello discovers a disturbing White House connection, he suspects Norman may not be what he appears to be. Things may not be what they appear to be.

Norman's trial commences in the courtroom of savvy D.C. trial court judge Cyrus Brooks. An angry nation rallies behind Norman. The jury debates whether Norman's actions may be legally justified by a rampant abuse of political trust, and threatens to unravel the very fabric of our dysfunctional government.

In an unprecedented and questionable manner that may destroy their respective careers, Lotello quietly approaches Brooks and they form a secret alliance to uncover the truth in this classic whodunnit mystery. Before it's too late.

US Senator Jane Wells had also been wondering. Whether tonight might be the night.

Her last two companions had been disappointing, downright boring. In every respect. Almost as boring as her political constituents. And having to pretend she actually cared about them.

Being single again definitely had its benefits. More or less. No longer back home in dull, sedate Kansas. But things were still pretty boring. Maybe she just found it more exciting sampling the other merchandise when she was stillmarried. She hoped tonight would prove more fulfilling.

Wells glanced in the mirror opposite her desk, making sure everything was in order. Not too bad for a fifty-year-old strawberry blonde in a bottle. Well, admittedly with a little help from Dr. Nip N’ Tuck. Looks had never been her problem. Or maybe that was her problem.

Tall and curvaceous, she still managed to fill out her power suit in all the right places. Wells closed her briefcase and walked from her lavish private office out into the spacious and well-appointed reception area. She carried herself in a way that was not easy for anyone to miss.

“Night, Jimmy,” Wells said to her new legislative aide, boyishly good-looking James Ayres. She considered his sandy brown locks and piercing hazel eyes—kind of a younger, chiseled version of Robert Redford—imagining for more than just a second what a frolic in the hay with Ayres might be like. Probably a lot more virile than my somewhat more successful, but older, recent partners. Difficult not to imagine that hard body of his gliding back and forth across mine. Certainly one way to get better acquainted with the staff! She tucked that picture away in the not-so-hidden recesses of her mind for further consideration.

Wells’ mind shifted unintentionally from Ayres to her parents. How disappointed they would be if they knew her real interest—like that of most of the other members of the WSOC—was not to manage Wall Street, but to be rewarded by Wall Street for not really managing it at all. She also couldn’t help but wonder how her parents would feel if they knew about her . . . lifestyle. Actually, she didn’t really wonder at all. She knew precisely how they’d feel. She didn’t feel much better about it herself.

“Good night, Senator,” Ayres replied, bringing Wells back into the moment. He summoned the elevator for her. “Robert’s here to drive you home. He’ll pick you up again in the morning at 9:30 and get you to the WSOC hearings on schedule.” Wells nodded and stepped into the elevator.

Described by his readers as a cross between Agatha Christie, Lee Child, and John Lescroart, bestselling author Ron Barak keeps his readers flipping the pages into the wee hours of the night. While he mostly lets his characters tell his stories, he does manage to get his licks in too.

Barak derives great satisfaction in knowing that his books not only entertain but also stimulate others to think about how things might be, how people can actually resolve real-world problems. In particular, Barak tackles the country's dysfunctional government representatives--not just back-seat driving criticism for the sake of being a back-seat driver, but truly framing practical remedies to the political abuse and corruption adversely affecting too many people's lives today. Barak's extensive legal background and insight allow him to cleverly cross-pollinate his fiction and today's sad state of political reality.

Ron and his wife, Barbie, and the four-legged members of their family reside in Pacific Palisades, California.
